Historic Overview

This antique color illustration features the colorful image of a Mutton Fish. The illustration comes from the book The Green Book of Salt Water Fish by Joe Godfrey, Jr. The book was copyrighted in 1939 by Whitman Publishing Company of Racine, Wisconsin. It is one of a series of two fish guides. The color illustrations are by Gordon Ertz.

This vintage illustration shows a Mutton Fish or Pargo with a detailed description. Its technical name is Lutianus analis, more commonly known as Mutton Snapper, and it is a large fish found from Florida to Brazil.  One of the most common snappers, the mutton snapper is one of the best saltwater fishes to eat. The larger fish resemble the red snapper with firm white flesh, and perfect for baking or broiling. The print is professionally matted in an 5” x 7” brown matte to setoff the beauty of the fish. Our vintage prints are shipped in a plastic sleeve between cardboard stiffeners to arrive in perfect condition.

Keep in mind, an antique print will never be “perfect” like a new print and there are sometimes tiny occasional spots and/or discoloring or aging. However, we only sell mint or almost mint prints and will not sell anything that we would not be proud to hang on our own walls!!!

Octopus - 1939 Color Print
$21.50
This antique color portrait features the colorful image of a pair of Octopuses. The print comes from the book The Book Of Fishes, Revised and Enlarged Edition, Presenting the Better Known Species of Food and Game Fishes of the Coastal and Inland Waters of the United States edited by John Oliver La Gorce, Litt.D., D.Sc. Vice President, National Geographic Society. The book was originally copyrighted in 1919. This edition published by the National Geographic Society of Washington, D.C. is from 1939. The colored plate was produced from an original painting by Hashime Murayama. This vintage print shows two different types of Octopus. A familiar figure in sea fiction and “Tall Stories”, the weird looking Octopus is repulsive with its big ugly head and gaping mouth. Its powerful jaws are similar to a parrot’s beak and the close-set eyes give off a demoniac glare. Large Octopuses have been known to spread their limbs up to 14 feet. The print is professionally matted in a large 11” x 14” brown matte to setoff the beauty of the fish. Our vintage prints are shipped in a plastic sleeve between cardboard stiffeners to arrive in perfect condition.
